The PTA Clothing Bank

The PTA Clothing Bank is operated by Springfield Council of PTAS (a 501c3 not-for-profit). 100% of donations go to helping purchase clothing for students of Springfield Public Schools who qualify for free/reduced lunches (or are referred by a principal, counselor, or school nurse due to emergency circumstances). We have no overhead because our helpers are all volunteers and SPS provides the space at no cost to the Council.

PTA Clothing Bank is located at 2343 W. Olive Street, 65802 in Study Alternative Center. It has a separate entrance behind the school, on the northeast side of the building.  Look for the double doors with our sign above the doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are you open? Many (but not all) Thursdays and 2 Saturdays throughout the school year. Please see the calendar above for specific dates. Generally, we are not open when school is not in session (holidays, snow days, etc).

What time are you open? Until further notice, our hours are 10am – 4:30 pm on Thursdays that we are scheduled to be open and 10am – NOON on Saturdays that we are scheduled to be open.

Where are you located? 2343 W. Olive Street, 65802, on the backside of Study Alternative Center. WE HAVE OUR OWN SEPARATE ENTRANCE that is NOT accessible from Study school. Just drive around back (north side of building) and you will see a sign designating parking and entrance for the PTA Clothing Bank. Follow the winding sidewalk between the school garden and the fenced playground to our double doors. Look for our sign over the entrance.

Who runs the PTA Clothing Bank? The PTA Clothing Bank is supported by every PTA unit in the Springfield Public Schools (SPS) district. Volunteers, funds, and clothing are all provided by your PTA/PTSA, and other community support and coordinated by Springfield Council of PTAs. Springfield Council of PTAs is a 501(c)3 not-for profit and all donations are deductible as allowed by IRS. SPS provides the building, utilities, technology, and janitorial support for the space at no cost to the PTA. We have no administrative overhead, so 100% of donations goes to directly to supporting students.

How do I get a hold of the PTA Clothing Bank? Our email and Facebook page are the best way to get a message to us. Our phone number is (417) 523-6437, however it is not the best way to reach us as we find it difficult to answer the phone when we are busy helping shoppers and we are not at the PTA Clothing Bank everyday. The phone is located at The PTA Clothing Bank. We are not there everyday. We try to check messages from home often, but the fastest way to reach us is to PRIVATE MESSAGE US ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE @ThePTAClothingBank. And, a helpful tip, it is very difficult for us to answer the phone while helping shoppers.

Who can shop at The PTA Clothing Bank? We serve any Springfield Public School student, who qualifies for free or reduced lunch. We serve SPS students from pre-school through senior in high school.

How do I sign up my student(s) to shop? Please contact your school nurse and ask them to refer your student to The PTA Clothing Bank. Your student will need to be referred again every school year.

What do I need to bring with me to shop for my student(s)? Your school nurse enters a referral for your student into our computer system. Please bring your STUDENT’S LUNCH NUMBER/STUDENT I.D. There is no paperwork to bring with you.

How many times throughout the school year can we shop at the PTA Clothing Bank? We hope to see your shopping for your student(s) 3 TIMES throughout the school year. We RECOMMEND that you space these visits out by at least 60 days so that your student(s) can receive seasonally appropriate clothing.

What do we shop for? EVERY time you visit for each student 5 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 lightweight jacket and IF AVAILABLE, 1 pair of pj’s, 1 belt, 1 bag or purse, 1-gently-used pair of shoes. ONCE PER YEAR: 5 pairs of socks, 5 new underwear, one winter coat, and 1 pair of gloves, 1 winter hat, 1 winter scarf.

What about new shoes? ONCE a year, your student will receive a brand-new pair of sneakers from the Kiwanis Shoe Bank; YOUR STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE THEIR NEW SNEAKERS FROM THE KIWANIS.

Are parents/guardians able to shop for themselves? No, we are sorry, but The PTA Clothing Bank serves the needs of Springfield Public School students only. All clothing is for SPS students only.

What do I need to do to volunteer? we ALWAYS need volunteers to sort donations, hang clothes on hangers, get things out on the shopping racks, straighten the shopping floor, or help with projects, etc. You can stay for an hour or all day-whatever works for you! If you volunteer during shopping hours, then you might also help our shoppers find clothing on the floor or help fold during shopping hours, then you might also help our shoppers find clothing or help fold and bag up clothing at checkout. Please refer to the schedule (above) for dates we are open. Bring a friend! We welcome and appreciate your help!

Do you still sign up to volunteer by school? Yes, please see the schedule (above), however, this does not mean that you can only volunteer on certain days. We welcome volunteers on ALL Thursdays and Saturdays that we are open!

Where do I donate items? THE PTA CLOTHING BANK at 2343 W. Olive when we are open (we can give a receipt if donated here); THE WASH HOUSE SOUTH COIN LAUNDRY at 3322 S. Campbell (at the intersection of Walnut Lawn / behind Chipotle); or THE WASH HOUSE COIN LAUNDRY EAST at 1755 E. Bennett (at the intersection of Glenstone). The WASH HOUSE locations will accept smaller bagged items and are open from 7am – 7pm, 7 days a week.

What can I donate? We can use clothing in sizes 4T to adult for kindergarten through high school students. We are also taking size 3T for pre-school students. We deeply appreciate donations of GENTLY-USED or LIKE-NEW items (shirts, shorts, pants, jackets, winter coats, dresses, shoes or accessories) without stains, holes, tears or excessive wear. We always need BRAND-NEW in-the-package socks and underwear, especially in packages of 5 or more. Due to limited space, we CANNOT accept bedding, furniture, or household items.

What is the best way to keep us up to date on donation needs, schedule changes, etc.? The best way to keep up with everything going on at The PTA Clothing Bank is to follow us right on our Facebook page @ThePTAClothingBank. Please tell your friends to like us and follow us, too!

What about snow days or holidays? We follow the Springfield Public Schools schedule, so if school is closed for a holiday or snow day, then we are also closed. We may close for weather or other times, so please check Facebook to make sure we are open.
